Matrimonial and Family Law
We represent and counsel individuals and families, no matter their orientation or composition, on a wide range of matrimonial and family law matters, including contested and uncontested divorces, pre-nuptial and post-nuptial agreements, separation and settlement agreements, custody and access rights, adoptions, reproductive and fertility matters, donor agreements, cohabitation agreements, civil unions and their dissolution and grandparent visitation issues and proceedings.
We handle both in- and out-of-court negotiated settlements. Although we have extensive experience with protracted litigation, we always prefer – and try our best – to use mediation techniques and collaborative processes to resolve our clients’ differences. Divorce can be a battleground of emotional conflict, which we try to discourage. Where helpful and appropriate, we refer our clients to psychological counseling and to parent coordinators. Our efforts always take into account the damage that conflict causes for the children of divorce, and we try to impress upon our clients that divorce should focus on the dissolution of an economic partnership rather than on blame and revenge. Our goal is to achieve the most efficient and emotionally satisfying results for our clients with the least possible destructive fall-out on their children through negotiations and, when necessary, with the help of the courts, where judges prize resolution and settlement rather than conflict and litigation.
We collaborate with valuation experts and have extensive experience with complex valuation issues, including the valuation of careers and professional practices and licenses, enhanced earnings, celebrity status, art inventories, real estate, stocks and stock options, businesses and educational degrees. We also collaborate with our professional colleagues in the areas of accounting, trust and estates and wealth management to insure the best financial planning results for our clients.
